En 1987 Chris Impellitteri da vida a la banda que lleva su nombre, junto al cantante de heavy metal Rob Rock (ex-Axel Rudi Pell, Tony MacAlpine, Joshua, Avantasia), con el que realizó su primer EP, que fue titulado "The black album". Ambos participaron en las letras. Rob Rock, en una entrevista sobre este álbum, dijo: "(el EP) fue rápido y crudo, no tuvimos mucho tiempo ni dinero, así que sólo nos pusimos a ello y lo grabamos... La respuesta fue estupenda, porque la gente podía escuchar cómo de directo y energético es". Y lo cierto es que el sonido del disco da la sensación de que estén tocando en directo.Durante 1988 Rob Rock comienza su carrera en solitario, entonces se une a la banda el cantante de metal Graham Bonnet (ex-Rainbow, Alcatrazz, Steeler). Lanzaron el álbum "Stand in line", uno de los de mayor éxito en la carrera de Impellitteri. En1992 regresa Rob Rock y con él se graba el disco "Grin and bear it", con un sonido algo diferente al anterior, pero con la calidad del Impellitteri de siempre.
Durante 1993 se graba un conocido EP de 5 canciones: "Victim of the system".


El ´94 se graba el disco "Answer to the master", uno de los favoritos de sus fans japoneses, y un disco muy melódico. De este disco salieron clásicos como la conocida "Warrior", "The future is black" o "The King is rising". "Screaming symphony" (1996) fue el siguiente disco, de estilo similar al anterior y con mucha fuerza y vitalidad en las canciones. Es una de las demostraciones más notables de la expléndida voz de Rob Rock.
En graban el EP "Fuel for the fire", cuyas canciones formarán parte del siguiente disco, excepto "Stand or fall" y "Tears in the eyes of the world". El año ´98 llega "Eye of the hurricane" que fue otro de los mejores discos de Impellitteri. El sonido es crudo, tiene baladas, dos instrumentales, y letras con mucho sentimiento. Junto con el cambio de milenio aparece en circulación el disco "Crunch" que fue un álbum con un estilo más duro, moderno y progresivo que los anteriores. Así lo demuestran canciones como "Beware of the Devil" o "Fear no evil".
















Durante el año 2002 regresa Graham Bonnet a la banda y graban "System X", un disco fuerte como el anterior. Las canciones son respuestas a temas emocionales, al atentado ocurrido el 11 de septiembre, a la justicia corrupta, racismo y la violencia. Los solos de Chris parecen dibujar la frustración de la sociedad de hoy en día. En este mismo año, apareció una recopilación llamada "The Very Best of Impellitteri. Faster than the speed of light".
En el 2004 "Pedal to the metal" da la bienvenida a un nuevo cantante joven, versátil y con gran capacidad para cambiar la voz: Curtis Skelton. Este disco, para algunos fue un buen disco, fuerte y potente, pero para otros, un cambio en el estilo de Impellitteri. Esto en verdad no es así, Chris dijo que era una especie de tributo al heavy metal, cada canción tiene algo de especial y nos recuerda a alguien, desde canciones en el estilo de Black Sabbath, Slipknot, melodías que recuerdan a Symphony-X, Blind Guardian, Black Label Society, coros del estilo de Queen... Es un disco curioso, atípico, y que merece la pena, ya que está cargado de fuerza y buenas letras que hablan del mundo de hoy.
